  • What do we talk about when we talk about educational innovation?
    Wenzhou
    2018

These days, people are busy reflecting on 2017 and looking forward to 2018. As I look back, my 2017 is a year of graduation. Looking at my personal growth over the year feels like reading a notebook on educational innovation. And I believe it is time to make a year-end review. After graduating from Zhongguancun No. 3 Primary School in Beijing, I enrolled in the Innovative Experimental Class of the High School Attached to Capital Normal University in 2007. In 2010, I was admitted to the Day Yuan Experimental Class of Beijing No. 4 High School. In Autumn 2014, I was accepted by Minerva, one of the most pioneering university in the world. Given my educational background, I quite often receive invitations to speak. Young parents often ask me the question of “how to develop their kids." There are even documentary directors and media outlets that would like to document my daily life for extended periods. I am being considered as an icon of educational innovation, more commonly known as a guinea pig.

  • Redefining study touring
    Xi'an
    2017

A warm greeting to you all. My congratulations to the opening of this forum on general education by the Xi’an Eurasia University and thank you for having me here. I learned a lot from the professors here. Quite luckily, I had good learning environments starting from kindergarten. Recently I was able to get involved in an innovative university and pursue innovation in different ways. Just like the forum today, these opportunities give me an all-around experience and understanding of education. It’s fair to say I not only received education in this say, but also an education about education itself. I started to realize that, if a student starts to understand education itself, then they will belief deeper in education, and even take a step further to shape their own education.

  • "Weirdo" : On non-typical education
    Shanghai
    2017

I know I was given a nickname “Qi Pa” (loosely translates to “a geeky weirdo”) when I was in high school. At first, I could not accept it. What is a Qi Pa anyway? According to the Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese, Qi Pa is a “unique and beautiful flower”, although Baidu would return Gao Xiaosong when you run a search (Laughter as the photo of Gao appears on screen). All joking aside, Gao Xiaosong as a famous alumnus of Beijing No. 4 High School a versatile genius in our hearts, and he is, indeed, “unique and beautiful”.

    Cities Endure the Ages

Two months ago, I sat before this LED screen for half an hour. It is a key exhibit of the Museum of the City of New York, using numbers to record the growth of the city — you can see light spots representing population and wealth multiplying, gathering and spreading. It took over 100 years for the city to grow from a small harbor town in the 1600s-1800s to a global metropolis in the 1900s. At that time I was thinking, for a man, 100 years could be his lifetime, but for a city, a time of wonders and miracles. The history of New York has proven that a city shares prosperity with its people. It is an extension of the life of those now living, but also a community of common destiny for future generations.

  • To give a fish, or to teach to fish?
    Shenzhen
    2015

    Two fish, ten years ago

This is a photo of me 10 years ago when I first visited Shenzhen in 2005. I remember that day a local friend took my family on a fishing excursion. I was fascinated by the ocean breeze, the sound of waves, and the sound of fishermen throwing nets. I guess this picture captured my happiest moment when the fisherman handed me two big fish they caught. That was a wonderful moment.

I took time to find this photo because I feel it works as a theme for my talk today, ten years after it was taken.
